Becoming a Language Assistant is an experience that will stay with you for all of your life.  You can improve your foreign language skills and explore a new culture. The experience will also help you to become more independent.

Every year, the programme allows around 35 young Mexican teachers to travel to the United Kingdom and a similar number of British young adults travel to Mexico. Between 2012 and 2013, the British Council sent more than 2,500 English Language Assistants abroad and received around 2,000 Foreign Language Assistants in the UK.

Become a Foreign Language Assistant in the United Kingdom

Do you want to teach in another country and improve your level of English? Are you able to think up class activities that could help British students improve their Spanish skills? If the answers to these questions are yes, the Language Assistant Programme could be for you!

The Language Assistant Programme (FLA) for Spanish mainly focusses on primary and secondary schools in the UK but it also includes other institutions. As a native Spanish speaker, you can help the students to gain confidence in speaking another language and you can stimulate their interest in the classroom for your culture.

Your role is to bring Mexico’s language and culture into the classroom and develop your activities so that learning the language is relevant, fun and useful for British students.

The FLA job includes working alongside the classroom teacher, working independently with small groups of students, helping the students to prepare for oral exams and contributing to make sure that there is a variety of subjects covered during your activities. As a Language Assistant, you can carry out various activities, such as reading, understanding, pronunciation, dictations and writing exercises. You can also contribute to international projects within the institution.

In Mexico, the Language Assistants Programme is a project carried out in a partnership between the British Council and the Mexican Ministry of Education (SEP). The SEP manages the application and selection process. For further information about how to become a Language Assistant in the UK, please visit the SEP’s website.

Become an English Become Language Assistant in Mexico

The role of an English Language Assistant is to bring the British Language and Culture to Mexican students. It is a fantastic opportunity and lets you make a difference.

Generally, Mexico is the most popular destination for those who are looking to go to Latin America. Even though it is one of the easiest countries for Europeans to settle in, you need to be pro-active, sociable and independent.

We invite both British undergraduate and postgraduate students to participate along with recent graduates as well in the Language Assistant Programme in Mexico. To apply, you should have an AS/Higher level or its equivalent in Spanish. You don’t necessarily need to be studying Spanish at university however we hope that the majority of applicants are doing so.

Your contract will be with the Mexican Ministry of Education (SEP – Secretaría de Educación Pública). You are expected to work between 14 and 18 hours per week (including lesson planning), however some institutions may ask you to work more hours but if they do, they should pay you extra for your services. The monthly salary is sufficient to live in any area of Mexico comfortably.

Depending on the type of institution, class sizes vary between 10 and 40 students. The students studying in universities and institutes are aged between 18 and 30 years old. At secondary level the children are aged between 12 and 18 years old and in primary school the children are aged between 6 and 11 years old.
